Upgrading Your Lighting Can Upgrade Your Life

With interior design, most people focus on the walls, floors, colors, and furniture first. Yet, the lights you choose may be one of the biggest changes you make, adding more space and brightness to a room, especially on dull days. Choosing the right lights is key for opening up your home - and it has additional benefits as well. Here are a few of our favorites.

Accentuate your personal design taste

A lighting fixture is a centerpiece and it’s a great chance to showcase your personal taste. Not all fixtures—chandelier, lamps, sconces—should be the same size. Otherwise, the eye searches for visual clarity without landing on anything specific. For a large space, such as a dining room or family room, a chandelier makes a great focal point. In a smaller-scale room, think about a distinctive floor lamp or vintage-inspired sconces flanking a piece of wall art.

Set the tone

If you want to be able to adjust your lights according to your mood or time of day, you can ask an Electrician to fit a dimmer switch. These can easily adjust the color or brightness of your bulb, to brighten or darken a room. Even better when paired with smart home lighting…

Reduce energy bills

Motion light detectors are simple devices that can be added to a ceiling or wall (you can find some that are built into a dimmer switch) to detect motion and light up when they do so. They turn the lights on when they detect motion and off when that motion stops. You can usually set the sensitivity and delay time for the lights to turn off after a room is vacated. These will save electricity, thus reducing energy bills. They will also make walking around your home late at night much easier.

Improve security

A dimmer switch with a built-in timer can keep its connected lights on a schedule you define; for instance, on at 7 p.m. and off at 8 a.m. Lights that follow a schedule have long been employed as a way to make a vacant house look as if it is occupied—like when you’re on vacation. These can be added inside or outside the home, which will warn off intruders.

Make life easier

You can also install lights that can be controlled through voice commands. Whether it’s through Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple Siri, voice control is convenient and over the last few years, have also become more reliable. It’s also a super convenient way to operate your home’s lights when your hands are occupied–like cooking in the kitchen or working on your computer.
