The internet is full of endless home improvement and renovation tips – more so now since the pandemic hit and people began taking up new projects to keep them occupied and their homes up to date with ever-changing trends.

You’ve undoubtedly seen many of these suggestions and perhaps even seriously considered trying one or two of them, only to realize you don’t have the appropriate tools to begin. The problem with the internet is that it expects you to have all manner of equipment, ranging from a humble hammer through to a professional standard vice.

But here’s a little secret: unless the project you want to undertake is extremely niche, you can typically improvise and use a selection of basic tools to achieve results.

Here are five basic tools that will see you through almost every home improvement and renovation task.

1. Drill

It’s not breaking news to learn that every basic tool kit requires a drill, but you’d be relatively surprised to learn just how many people don’t own such a universally standard tool. Drills can be used for just about everything; installing shelves, putting up a curtain rail, building furniture, mixingpaint and even sanding sharp corners down. It’s inevitable that you’ll need a drill at some stage during a home renovation project, so make sureyou invest in one with a host of attachments. You’ll want to make sure you have a suitable size drill bit for every size hole you’ll ever need to make. Solid carbide router bits are worth investing in for a better, smoother drill finish, but they’re not necessarily essential for general home improvement and renovation projects.

We caution you to be extremely careful when using equipment, however. They can be dangerous if they are not used properly, and you may end up having to call in someone (like Metro roofing and remodelling) to finish the job if you are not careful. While calling in a company is the last thing that you are going to want to do for anything DIY, there are some projects where you may not have a choice if risk for injury or property damage is too high.

2. Adjustable Wrench

Tools are heavy and they can take up a lot of space, so any opportunity you get to downsize your toolbox should be snapped up. It just so happens that one of the ways you can save space yet still undertake a multitude of projects is to invest in an adjustable wrench. Buying one of these will enable you to tighten and loosen all manner of nuts and bolts without having to sift through tens of individual spanners.

3. Claw Hammer

Alongside a drill as an essential tool is a claw hammer. Whether you’re trying to insert nails into the wall or remove existing nails, a claw hammer can do the job. This is one of the biggest tools you’ll need, but if you’re looking at building your own furniture or dismantling an object for a refurb, a claw hammer is the tool you’ll need.

4. Spirit Level

You can have all the tools in the world, but if you don’t have a spirit level, your projects will turn out wonky. Whilst there’s nothing more endearing than a handmade item, all your efforts will be redundant if you fail to make the object usable. From shelves to furniture, coat hooks to curtain rails, a spirit level will ensure your project is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

5. Stud Finder

When compiling a basic tool kit for home renovations and improvements, many people focus on screwdrivers and hex keys and forget potentially the most important item of all: a stud finder. When you begin drilling and hammering into walls, you need to consider the fact they hide wires and pipes, and hitting one of these wires or pipes could result in either an injury to yourself, or a catastrophic leak of either water or gas. To avoid hitting anything that could have dangerous consequences, you will need to check exactly what is behind the wall, and the way you do this is with a stud finder.

These five tools encompass all manner of home improvements and will see you through the vast majority of projects – enabling you try all the DIY trends your heart desires.
