Covid Summer Skincare: Back To Basics

We are gearing up for one weird summer. And while none of us will be jet-setting anywhere or out frolicking at any pool parties in the near future, the switch from cold spring air to summer sun is still about to do a number on our skin .

Furthermore, with everything as crazy as it is, the last thing any of us need right now is a lengthy and complex skincare regime. Honestly - if we get a shower in every day, that is now officially considered a huge success. So as the entire world seems to be Marie Kondo’ing their lives from anything extraneous, we thought this would be the perfect time to follow suit and go back to basics with skincare. See below for the top 5 things you should be doing for your skin - especially during times of seasonal transition.

With that in mind, here are 5 things to do for your skin during warmer weather:

Drink Lots Of Water

Ok we all know this one. But how many of us actually do it? And what would happen if, instead of blowing cash on a ton of new skincare products, we just did the one (almost) free and easily accessible thing that we’re supposed to be doing for our skin?

Whether that means carrying a cute water bottle around with you all day or setting up a system to ensure you’re drinking at least 8 glasses when home (we like to pound 8 oz every time we walk into the kitchen, which is definitely over 8 times a day), drinking lots of water hydrates your body (and therefore your skin) and clears your system (hello glowing skin). Here’s another great resource for tips and tricks on upping your water intake.

Find A Skincare Routine That Suits You

Our skin is as unique as we are. And while there are a ton of regimes out there, finding a skincare routine that actually works for your skin takes a little work and patience. It may take a bit of trial and error when it comes to finding a skincare routine, but a great place to start is with the basics: a gentle cleanser, eye cream, and moisturizer. Once you find products in these categories that work for you, you can start to play around with serums and masks. Just make sure to try only one new product at a time so that you can keep tabs on how any new product is affecting your skin.

And don’t forget the sunscreen…

Use Sunscreen

So let’s elaborate on sunscreen for a minute. Yes, we will be indoors way more than any other spring/summer of our lives. Also true that half our face will most likely be covered should we be outdoors. But that doesn’t mean we should cancel the sunscreen right along with our summer vacays. UVA light can pass right through your windows so as totally unfair as it is that we still get the damage without the fun, it’s just the way it goes.

One of the easiest ways to make sure you’re getting a little SPF protection is to opt for a moisturizer and/or foundation with SPF worked into it. However these products don’t often have enough for outdoor coverage so make sure to apply the real stuff if you’re headed outdoors - even under that mask!

Invest In Quality Makeup And Skincare

Another great way to look after your skin is to ensure you’re investing in high-quality makeup and skincare. Although it will be expensive at first, buying products that are of higher quality are more likely to protect your skin during the warm weather. Whether that means buying an expensive moisturiser or trying to find the perfect matte eyeliner, you need to ensure you’re buying stuff that isn’t going to be damaging to your skin.

Take Your Makeup Off Every Night. Like, for real

Pretty much the absolutely worst thing you could do for your skin is leave on your makeup overnight. While this is a lot less likely these days (who else has given up on makeup most days?), we still get grime on our face throughout the day - and leaving all that gunk on your face throughout the night can have the same result as leaving on your makeup - it clogs pores and can cause buildup - and can prevent your skin from getting the oxygen it needs.

It can also be said that it’s a little easier to forget to really cleanse off the grime from your face at the end of the day when said day just seems to blend into night etc etc. Our editors love Honest Company Cleansing wipes, but our favorite way to really get the gunk off is a good double wash, starting with a cleansing oil (Biossance’s Squalane Cleansing Oil is our fave) and following suit with a gentle cleanser.

Often, the biggest changes come from doing the simplest things - the challenging part (and where most people drop off) is to do them consistently. Hopefully, this simplified list will make it easier for you to maintain glowing, gorgeous skin throughout our #covidsummer.
