Decorating Your Porch With Natural Elements

Decorating according to the season can be so fun and actually, pretty sustainable - especially when we use natural, seasonal materials. But not everything in nature can hold up long enough to for it to be worth uses within decorating. Here are our favorite natural elements for outdoor decorations.

Treated Wood

Wood is one of our favorite materials for outdoor décor. Upcycle an old bench or simply turn a wooden board into a welcome sign. Seal it with linseed oil or another chemical-free alternative to prevent it from rotting from moisture exposure.

Coir Doormats

Coir is a popular material for doormats that we’ve all seen at hardware and home décor stores. It utilizes the natural fibers of the coconut shell, and it does an excellent job at cleaning shoes. Just remember to clean your coir doormat to make it last and keep it in good condition.

Potted Plants

Potted plants are some of the best natural elements for decorating a porch because they purify the air and bonus - they help pollinators! They are also huge mood boosters, which we’d argue is a good thing to put at the front of any main entrance we’re about to walk through. We like planting annuals every season instead of perennials since it’s nice to adjust the color scheme for holidays and changing seasons.

DIY Wreaths

There are so many ways to make seasonal wreaths from natural materials. Our favorite way is to combine twigs and branches that we find around the yard with dried flowers and herbs. Making wreaths is a fun pastime that the whole family can enjoy together. Save the extras and give them away as gifts.

Pumpkins and Gourds

Since fall is officially here, we’d be remiss not to mention pumpkins. Who doesn’t want to come home to a happy orange gourd sitting on the porch? If possible, keep an eye out at farmers’ markets for special varieties in different colors. Having a unique collection always adds to the visual interest of a front porch display.

We hope this list gives you some inspiration for decorating your porch this season. And even if the temperatures haven’t cooled off where you live, getting the porch on theme is a great way to start feeling the season ahead of time.
