Determining The Best Order For Multiple Renovations
Gearing up to do some interior upgrading in more than one spot in your home? One of the big questions when deciding to pull the trigger on upgrades is which room do we do first? Do we opt for the most expensive update and invest in a new kitchen or do we opt to redecorate some of the bedrooms first? Got a basement and require a basement remodeling or are you looking to get a porch added? The possibilities are endless.
To start with, the easiest way to narrow down options is to look at the budget as that will make a big difference in the opportunities we have when updating. As mentioned above, if it’s a larger budget, it’s possible to start with the kitchen. But if the budget isn’t as flexible, look to do a room that is more affordable first. Or - save for longer and update the most expensive one down the line.
To help decide what room to update first, we put the following guide together.
What room requires the most done to it?
To start with, walk around the home and decide on the room which you think needs the most done to it. Sure, you may want a new kitchen, however, your guest bedroom may be a more immediate requirement given lifestyle. It may be that some of the rooms could do with a fresh lick of paint and color, allowing you to concentrate on the more urgent changes. We’re total nerds and love using spreadsheet software like Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel to help note down the order of the rooms which need updating as well as putting in an estimate of the costs required. This way we can narrow it down by urgency or budget - and reference/update as we go.
The cost of updating the rooms
The cost of how much each room will cost is extremely important when deciding on which rooms to update. The faster we can figure out what you will need to budget for, the sooner we can update the room. Alternatively, this works the opposite way. Wait for longer and update the more expensive rooms first, then work on the lower-budget rooms after. There is no wrong or right answer to this as it’s really down to preference and priorities.
High Traffic Rooms
Having a new kitchen put in usually means the new one will be inaccessible - meaning you will have no kitchen until the new one is done. The same applies to having a new bathroom installed. If you only have one, you will be without it until the new one is installed. If there’s a room that you require the use of more urgently than the other, then delaying it until it’s not as important is worth the consideration. For example, if you have just had a baby, then the use of the kitchen may be very important and updating should be delayed until your little one is a tiny bit older. Plus, it’s kind of nice to know that the cabinets were on their way out anyway when the kiddo finds the sharpies…. just saying
