In the last two years, home security has become something of a trending topic. Feeling secure in the spaces we spend the most time in makes a heck-of-a-lot of sense - and can ease anxiety, increase mental wellbeing, and increase our ability to thrive. Regardless of where you live, here are eight ways you can make your home safer.

  1. Carry out regular home maintenance checks, to ensure that no repairs need to be carried out. While this may seem like a bit of a hassle, the sooner you identify safety risks, the easier (and cheaper) they are to resolve. If you aren’t sure where to get started, check out this home maintenance checklist.

  2. If home security is constantly in your thoughts, or you have noticed an increase in crime in your local area, you may benefit from installing garden flood lights around your property as an enhanced security measure. Not only is this an excellent way to deter potential theft and crime, but it can also give you the peace of mind you have been craving.

  3. As mentioned previously, one of the easiest ways to keep your home safe is by keeping on top of all maintenance tasks. However, it’s important that in doing so - you do not put yourself at risk. Ensure that you have access to all of the tools you need for DIY renovation tasks and that you do not do any tasks you are not capable of carrying out. For example, you should ensure that you bring in professionals when necessary.

  4. Check the batteries in your fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide detector on a monthly basis and replace them when necessary. This is one of the easiest ways that you can make your home a safer place, as it only takes a few minutes to check whether or not they are in good working order.

  5. Keeping your home safe also means keeping your home healthy - ensuring that it cannot contribute negatively to your own health and wellbeing. For example, while a little dust here and there is sometimes unavoidable, it can lead to a series of health issues if not addressed. Thankfully, this can simply be resolved by regular cleaning and vacuuming.

  6. Purchase an alarm system that can alert you should anyone enter your property during the night, or at a time when you are away from the property. Right now, there are hundreds of different alarms on the market for you to select from - meaning that you don’t have to spend a lot of money in order to feel safer.

  7. Install a video doorbell so that you know who is at your door without having to step foot off the sofa. Additionally, these devices will send notifications to your phone, so that you can also check up on your home security throughout the day. This is particularly useful if you are expecting parcels to arrive, but don’t have the time to sit around and wait for them.

  8. Another way in which you can make your home safer is by teaching your children the importance of home security. For example, if you have recently given them a key to the home for the first time, you should teach them to always lock the door when they return home, etc.
