Home Projects for Vintage Lovers
It seems like everything vintage has come back into the mainstream over the last decade, and we’re not mad about it whatsoever. From sustainable and financial benefits to an incredible outlet to express individual style, vintage materials are often our favorite sources of inspiration. Here are a few of our favorite home projects for the vintage lovers out there.
Vintage Sewing
Learning to sew your own clothes is a fulfilling experience. No one else in the world will have a closet like yours; plus, you won’t contribute to the ecological and mental nightmare that is fast fashion. If you love vintage clothing, there are tons of amazing resources out there to teach you how to make your own —some will even teach you how to use historical sewing methods, which we think is pretty dope. We also love sourcing vintage and dead stock materials for upholstery, drapes, linens, you name it. It’s a great way to get a unique look that avoids trends and stands the test of time.
Restoration Projects
YouTube has thousands of channels dedicated to vintage restoration projects. Some people are professional painting and costume preservationists, while others are regular people who love giving old items a new breath of life.
Model Trains
While not technical a home project, it’s definitely a project that occurs in the home - and can be a great vintage project for the kiddos (and anyone else who’s into them in the family). Model railroading is another hobby beloved by vintage enthusiasts - and it can get intense. Model trains have a fascinating history that seems to be continuing strong even today. Some people love caring for their trains like they are their children, building huge, decorated layouts for them to run on.
Upcycling Furniture
There’s something satisfying about scouring an antique store for a beat-up piece of furniture and turning it into a modern eclectic décor feature. Tables, chairs, sofas, desks, and wardrobes make wonderful upscaling projects because we can refinish, repaint, and reupholster them any way we choose. It’s also a great way to turn individual pieces of furniture in the home into a cohesive set. Upcycling also makes a nice side hustle if you’re willing to take commissions for your work!
