Changes You Can Make To Improve Your Basement Space

Every homeowner experiences the inevitable time when aspects of their living space becomes outdated and unfashionable. Just like how Art Deco came and went (and is back - and we’re so here for it), so do the current styles of home layouts. And while everything comes back around again, when it comes our homes, we don’t usually feel like waiting a decade or two for that to happen.

But, what about the basement? They often get overlooked by other rooms in the home and are mainly reserved for storage or a theater room. However, homeowners are now taking renovations into their own hands and completely changing what basements are used for. Here’s are a few favorite ways of ours to improve a basement space with a little creativity.

Adapt to Modern Styles

Basements usually store a home’s boiler, water heater, break panels, and air-conditioning systems. Often, homeowners leave the room unfinished and mainly keep their unused goods in it while others transform their basement into a completely new space, providing room for entirely new possibilities.

One of the best changes you can make to improve your basement space is to create a socializing area. It doesn’t have to only be a storage space. Add finished floors and lighting for an elegant and modern look. Paint the walls a neutral grey, add a bar, a pool table, or make it an impressive workout space—the choice is up to you. You can design it however you please.

Create the Perfect Mood

Just like the rest of the home, basements can reflect mood. Create the mood that suits the area best and creates a good sense of flow. It’s a fun and exciting way to dip your toes into new ideas and think of unique ways to bring attention into an often-forgotten space.

Expand your homes atmosphere into the basement. Make it an intimate wine cellar and wine-tasting room. Corral all that home gym equipment, amp up the mood lighting (we love mirror lighting for basements) and turn the basement into a sleek fitness room. Or go for full relaxation and make the downstairs a spa and steam room. However you wish to transform your basement, make it someplace you love to be.

Rethink Excess Storage

Depending on how much room you have and your budget, there’s plenty that you can do. For example, if your basement offers a lot of space, you can build a separate storage room for extra belongings. We also recommend hiring a professional organizer to help re-work the space for ultimate usability. What you may pay extra in costs hiring a good organizer, you will by far save in time and efficiency.

If space isn’t an option, go through your belongings and downsize them. Throw away anything you can’t salvage and donate unused items to your local charity or secondhand store. Reducing your clutter allows for optimal use of your basement and improves your health.
