Post Covid New York: Travel Like a Local

Yes, we are all currently stuck at home. But that doesn’t mean our minds can’t wander and we can’t let our pathological urges to plan future travels run wild and free - starting with a future fantasy trip to one of the overall most visited (and currently least) US destinations, New York. Afterall, when NY is finally open (and safe) again, visiting the Big Apple is kind of a perfect way to show appreciation and love for all the city has gone through. Hell, after this, even the old tourist traps are sounding pretty appealing. If there’s anything a pandemic teaches, it’s the value of experiences outside the home.

With that in mind, scroll down for four ways to enjoy NYC like a New Yorker underneath.

Catch A Show

Ok yes. Tourists do this. In fact, it’s often a cornerstone of the most basic travel itinerary to Manhattan. However, local New Yorkers often catch a show as though a Broadway musical is a bus or subway. And actually, believe it or not, a lot of visitors end up skipping over this experience due to perceived hassle, cost, or the chunk of time it could cut out of a quick visit. Regardless, snagging your Book of Mormon tickets online (the Today Tix website makes it super easy) will be a memory you’ll hang on to for the rest of your life.

Quick tip: Grab a bite to eat first, as shows tend to finish late.

Order From A Food Truck

Ok yes, we have every single brunch meal planned out already. And while we could eat our way through New York for the rest of our lives, some of our favorite meals have come from the street. Aside from Eataly (or pickup from The Butcher’s Daughter), our second favorite grab and go option for a meal you won’t regret are actually food trucks. Food trucks are everywhere and have some of the best takeout meals in the entire city. Hop in line and find out why for yourself…

Drink In Local Spots

Even if you’ve got a broken arm, you can throw a rock and probably hit a few bars in New York. Regardless, the best places to drink are more local neighborhood watering holes. While Soho and Greenwich Village will always have our favorite libations, Williamsburg is another great option. It’s unique, less touristy (sort of), and somewhat more affordable.

Quick Tip: Shopping in Williamsburg is pretty fantastic, not to mention the food. Make a day trip to Brooklyn to make the most of it.

Avoid Hotels

Hotels definitely have their upsides, but they can also be overly expensive in NYC. Plus, they don't really give you the full local experience. Opt for an Airbnb (look for one with a kitchen to save extra coin) for a more on-the-ground experience and don’t be shy about asking your host for more local, insider tips, especially for their specific neighborhood. Additionally, you may want to position yourself outside of Manhattan to keep the costs low, while giving you an excuse to ride through different neighborhoods on the subway.
