Three Life Changes Mid-Pandemic

No matter where our heads were pre-covid, it’s safe to say that the majority of us have been reassessing our future and rearranging everything - from our homes, to our perspective, to our strategies.

While the uncertainty ahead means an awareness that any future laid plans still possess an element of limbo, there is a growing trend of people who are making big changes with their lives in the midst of this global crisis. And in a way, it makes total sense. We asked three people who are mid-life change to fill us in on what it’s been like:

Moving Homes

A mid-pandemic move sounds insane, but in many ways it’s actually an act of resilience. Life changes happen, pandemic or not! From moving for more space for your growing family to moving closer to a job or extended family, the benefits for moving outweigh the consequences for some.

“We have a baby coming in 8 months and moving is going to be a lot more difficult the more pregnant we are - and moving after the baby (especially if Covid is still around ) sounds even worse, so right now, believe it or not, is the perfect time. Plus, the housing market is holding strong right now so it’s actually a decent time for us to be buying a new home and selling our old one. I’m not sure if that will be the case in a year so in some ways, making a big life change like this right now feels extra prudent.” — Emmanuelle

Moving is stressful, but in the midst of a pandemic, it’s helpful to make a list of all the little things you might need to do for a move ahead of time (such as lining up a locksmith ahead of your move to help change locks from previous owners) to help eliminate the stress. Allowing your space to sit empty a day or two after the movers move your items is another great safety precaution given the circumstances.

Career Change

Yes, the unemployment rate is skyrocketing and not everyone has the luxury of switching careers at the moment. However if you find yourself sans job and your financial situation is fairly steady for a month or two, the silver lining might be that this could be an excellent time to explore that career change you were considering. It could be argued that lot of people (or most people) have no idea what they want to do when they leave school or college and end up in a job that, by default, becomes their career.

“I was laid off from my administrative job within the first week of Covid, which was absolutely devastating. I even had to move back in with my parents, which was, in many ways, humiliating. But then I realized that this was actually a golden opportunity for me to switch careers. I’m applying to virtual internships I wouldn’t have been able to live off of previously but are in the line of work I’m passionate about. My hope is that this time provides me the pause I need to change gears for a better future.” — Angela

Starting a Family

“We could have waited till this pandemic is over to try to get pregnant, but for us, it was now or never. It has definitely been stressful to be pregnant right now - doctor’s visits are just plain weird. But it has also been a wonderful time to nest and prep the home for our newest member. The beautiful thing about life is that it happens regardless of what else is going on in the world. Life goes on. And I think being pregnant in a time like this really drives home that message of hope.” — Jessica
