The winter season is coming, which means in some places, snow may be on the ground for a few months. This can be an exciting time of year, but it also brings with many un-fun challenges. If you do nothing else, here are 5 things to do to prep your house for the upcoming winter.

1. Check Your Roof

Your roof is likely the first thing to receive some snowfall during this time of year. You must keep an eye on it, so there aren't any damages! Look out for ice dams, which can be dangerous and expensive if not repaired on time. You should also inspect your roof for any missing or loose shingles. This can be an issue if you end up with a lot of snowfall during the winter, so it is best to get on top of this early! Finally, check out your attic and make sure there isn't too much weight in it. If not enough insulation was used when building your home, this could result in some severe problems later down the road!

2. Inspect Your Fireplace

Having a fireplace can be exciting! This is the perfect way to stay warm when it's cold outside. However, if your home doesn't have an effective chimney system, you aren't getting full use of that fireplace. Use this time before winter hits to get in contact with a professional about inspecting and maintaining your chimney, so you are prepared for any fires over the holiday season.

3. Paint, Caulk And Seal Exterior Wood

It's essential to take care of any exposed wood on your home as soon as possible! Paint and caulk cracks, seams, and holes in exterior siding immediately. This will help keep water from seeping into the sensitive areas where it can cause damage over time. It is also a good idea to use weatherproofing sealant for exposed doors or window sills.

4. Check The Heating System

You don't want to be stuck with a blizzard coming through and no way of staying warm! Make sure your heating systems are working properly by getting in touch with the professionals. Heating systems such as ovens are critical during the winter seasons, do the oven repair before it is too late. It is especially important to make sure your furnace has an adequate amount of carbon monoxide detectors. This will ensure everyone's safety and prevent the spread of any toxic fumes!

5. Check Your Drainage System

If your home does not have a drainage system, it is important to get one installed before the winter season comes. This will help keep you safe from any basement flooding that could occur when there are heavy snowfalls or rainfall during this time of year! If you do already have a drainage system in place, make sure they are free of debris and clean so that water can flow freely through them.
