What We Did To Simplify A Big Move

Looking to move more than just a neighborhood or two away? As veteran movers ourselves, we’ve gotten pretty good at keeping it fairly painless (fairly). Given we’re gearing up for what’s one of the bigger moves in our life, we’re sharing a little insight as to what’s worked for us in the past.

Soften The Transition

Moving from one dwelling to another is one thing. But fully moving locations is a whole other experience. One thing we’re planning on doing to soften the transition is to rent for a while, while we look for homes for sale. The benefits to this are threefold. You can settle into a new life and get a good understanding of what your lifestyle in your new town will mean for the type of space you need. It also gives you a chance to test out a neighborhood before fully committing to it. Additionally, starting with a rental takes the pressure of finding your dream home from afar, giving you more time to enjoy the hunt and find the perfect home, long term.

Research The Area

It’s a bit of a given that researching the area is a great idea, but there are specific things to look for to give you a really clear idea of how your life will fit into it. Look at things like local crime rates, school ratings if you have children or if you are planning on having them while you live here, neighborhood facilities and amenities, accessibility to everyday needs such as groceries, etc.

Sell Your Home

While we love holding onto properties, we also love not having to worry about them long distance. If keeping your old home as an investment property isn’t in the plan, then you need to sell your home. Hate to break it to you, but this might take a lot of work, especially if you want a solid sale.

A few things that can get you a higher price tag - visual upgrades like a fresh coat of paint inside and out, fixing anything obvious that’s broken, etc. Plus, keep the styling minimal so people can imagine their family living there rather than seeing a home that feels like someone else’s.

Hire All The Necessary Services

We used to do everything ourselves. Now, we hire out whatever we can. Once we crossed the 30-35 year threshold, we considered it the safer, cheaper option when factoring the risk of injury - or killing each other. But sorting out all of the services that you are going to need will still take time. The list is extensive and includes movers, cleaners, surveyors, realtors, and more. In order to keep organized, we recommend that you make a chronological list, from start to finish for your move, and check everything off as you have them sorted out. It might be a long process to get everything in order, but it will be worth it once it has been completed.

Oh and when you are looking at companies to hire, make sure that you are checking the reviews before you pay for anything. We also prefer word-of-mouth over Google searches, any day.
